The Chilean Territory Antarctica, or Chilean Antarctica,
includes all the lands, islands, reefs and glaciers
located between the meridians 53°W and 90°W
and between the parallels 61°S and 90°S (the
South Pole), with a surface of approximately 1.350.000
km2.
Here
is some information about Villa Las Estrellas, King
George Island:
It is the only base of all Antarctica that has families
residing year round. Between 75 to 80 people, which
includes 13 families, live during the winter. In summer
this number doubles. Until 1985 only two children had been
born. It has several services such as a ar runway, post
office, a bank, hospital, a civil office of records
and a school of basic education.
Present
and Future Antarctica:
The most significant act for Chile, nevertheless, was the inauguration of the "Villa Las Estrellas" on April 9, 1984, on King George Island, in the South Shetland Islands. It is located near the Meteorological Center "President Frei" and three kilometers from Base Lieutenant Marsh.
Initially there were only six families. After a few
months it had become a town with 12 families becoming
the first and only population of civil colonists established
in the Antarctica, an experience which had not been
registered in Antarctica's history. The success of
this project allowed the registration of two births,
among the firsts on the Antarctica territory and the
firsts in Chilean Antarctic.

At
present, "Villa Las Estrellas" relies on
a permanent population, an inn, infantile childcare,
a school, mini hospital, a small supermarket, a post
office and a bank, which makes it an actual human
colony, to the such the point that it has turned into
an important enclave of logistic support for other
nations that have facilities on King George Island
and surroundings.
The provisions are taken periodically by air, at the
expense of the Air Force of Chile. The houses of the
colony are quite big and comfortable, built on 100
square meters and are made of Lenga wood on a solid
chassis of steel, with special adjustments in roofs
and windows to isolate the environmental cold.
The success of " Villa Las Estrellas " has
not been the only one for Chile. In July, 2000, news
of another scientific discovery took place, the finding
by a Chilean group of investigators discovered a natural
sanctuary of Antarctic Minke whales, which had developed
its own habitat on this glaciated continent, adapting
to its climatic extreme conditions. The refuge of
the whales was defined by the scientists as "
... a new population and species of Minke whales in the southern hemisphere ". Apparently, the
cetaceans developed an extraordinary adjustment that
allowed them to permanently inhabit the Antarctic
waters without having to emigrate during the austral winter. |
